During a visit to Tashkent earlier this week, Transport Minister Aivis Ronis urged Uzbek authorities to make more use of Latvian ports and logistics infrastructure services, including investments into these areas, and to expand the cooperation with Latvia by securing freight flows to and from Afghanistan, the Transport Ministry informed Nozare.lv.

Upon returning from the visit, Ronis stressed, "The current cooperation with Uzbekistan is constructive and pragmatic: both countries have developed close cooperation to ensure NATO freight transport for the allies' needs in Afghanistan. It is important for the cooperation to continue, because transport of various freights to and from Afghanistan will have to be provided in the future as well", writes LETA.

During the visit, Ronis had meetings with Uzbek parliament representatives, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Komilov, Foreign Economic Affairs, Investments and Trade Minister Elyor Ganiyev, and Uzbekistan Railways head Achilbay Ramatov. Political and economic cooperation between Latvia and Uzbekistan, further development of the relations, and freight transport to and from Afghanistan via Latvian ports was discussed at these meetings.

Ronis together with Defense Minister Artis Pabriks (Unity) were on a working visit to Tashkent from February 20 to February 23 to meet with Uzbek officials and discuss political and economic cooperation between Latvia and Uzbekistan. The Latvian delegation also included Latvijas dzelzcels railroad company CEO Ugis Magonis and Transport Ministry's deputy state secretary Uldis Reimanis.
