Bombardier demands a punitive compensation from Estonian Air

Canadian plane producer Bombardier has submitted a legal claim against Estonia's national carrier Estonian Air as the latter did not buy out all the planes it had promised to and chose the production of the Brazilian Embraer instead, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Estonian Air's PR manager Ilona Eskelinen said that the legal dispute concerns additional plane procurement from the Bombardier plant but did not agree to comment more.

"First we are trying to understand the reasons of submitting the claim. Our lawyers in Canada have asked Bombardier to send the details concerning the claim and after the corresponding information is sent, we can react to it. Estonian Air is convinced that Bombardier's claim is unjustified," said Eskelinen.

EA bought three planes from Bombardier and had an option to buy three more. Eskelinen said that the preliminary agreement was conditional, presuming an approval by the Estonian Air council, which could have received only if the financing conditions offered by the Export Development Canada would have been acceptable. "Since Bombardier did not present acceptable conditions, after the deadlines had passed, Estonian Air turned to another company producing regional planes," said Eskelinen.

Estonian Air's manager Tero Taskila has said that Bombardier wanted to demand a higher price for the following planes.
