Metro in Vilnius – only through EU money

Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said that the idea of the metro fostered by the major of the municipality of Vilnius city was possible only if the support of the EU would be got, informs LETA/ELTA.

According to Butkevicius, there were no other resources for such a grand plan.

 

"The project of metro could be implemented only if the European Union (EU) will give a separate monetary support for this project. This is the only possible way the project to be accomplished. I cannot see any other ways, "said the prime minister while giving an interview to the nation radio.

 

Speaking about the financial problems of the Vilnius City Municipality, the Prime Minister told that their causes was the allocation of to the city during the reign of conservatives too small part of the tax on income and the implementation of projects without reducing debt and improving financial obligations.

 

Since 2014, the share of the allocated Vilnius tax income will increase from 42 to 50%, the municipality will provide a soft loan from the Finance Ministry.
