According to the passenger trains procurement contract between Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail Group and Estonian train traffic operator Elron, the last, 38th Stadler FLIRT train reached Estonia ahead of deadline, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.
In 2009, Elron, then called Elektriraudtee AS, declared a procurement of 18 electric and 20 diesel trains. The cost of the order for electric trains was nearly 80 million euros, of which 85% was financed by the EU Cohesion Fund.
The value of the new diesel trains was 96 million euros, and they were taken into capital lease with the help of Swiss financial company Estonia Train Finance AG.
The first new trains began servicing passengers in July 2013 and since then have travelled a total of over 1.2 million kilometres of railway, serviced over 5 million trips, and increased the number of passengers by nearly 45 percent.
