Latvian Independence Day military parade on November 18, 2017 will be the
largest since the restoration of independence, the Defense Ministry's press
department confirmed to LETA.
Over 1,000 National Armed Forces and Home Guard soldiers will march in the
parade, as well as border guards, police officers, firefighters and Youth
Guards. Naval Forces Commander Ingus
Vizulis will head the parade, which will be received by President Raimonds Vejonis, National Armed Forces
Commander Leonids Kalnins and
Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis
(Greens/Farmers).
The parade will be attended by esteemed military guests from abroad,
including Commander of the Canadian Army Paul
Wynnyk.
Marching in the parade will be soldiers of the Canadian-led multi-national
NATO battalion station in Latvia.
Also marching in the parade will be soldiers from Denmark, Germany,
Estonia, Great Britain, Lithuania, Sweden and the United States, with whom
Latvian soldiers work shoulder to shoulder in various military missions and
training operations on a daily.
At the rear of the parade will be a display of Latvian and allied military
hardware, including Spanish and Polish tanks, as well as US Blackhawk
helicopters and NATO fighters currently based in the Baltics.
Also in display for this first time will be the self-propelled howitzers
recently purchased from Austria, as well as the CVR(T) armored vehicles
purchased from Great Britain.
