Police halt demonstration in Riga Old Town
Riga police halted several dozen people from marching to the Freedom Monument on July 1 evening, who were to commemorate the liberation of Riga from the Soviet Union on July 1, 1941 and the entry of Nazi forces into the capital. The reason – the march's organizer – Uldis Freimanis, was absent.
Police officers blocked the marchers' way at the intersection of Kungu and Kalku streets in Old Town, informs LETA.
Two people were detained, including Igors Siskins, a member of the ultra-radical "Thundercross" organization. The other marchers then backtracked to the Occupation Museum, but as LETA observed, they individually made their way to the Freedom Monument.
A large crowd was at the monument and the police were out in large numbers. About 10 "anti-march" protesters stood in white shirts.
LETA already reported that Freimanis had been called in for questioning by Security Police at 5 p.m. yesterday.
