Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis – new education and science minister in Latvia

Today, Latvian Saeima voted in the Reform Party's Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis as the next education and science minister, reports LETA.

46 MPs voted for Dombrovskis. Dombrovskis' candidacy was supported by Unity, the Reform Party, All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK (VL-TB/LNNK) and independent MPs.

 

28 MPs from Harmony Center voted against Dombrovskis. Greens/Farmers and Imants Paradnieks (VL-TB/LNNK) abstained.

 

Dombrovskis has set five education and science priorities for 2013-2014, which match former Education and Science Minister Roberts Kilis' initiatives.

 

Dombrovskis wants to create a link between general and professional education teacher motivation, salaries and performance evaluation.

 

The minister also prioritizes free general education, vocational education in close cooperation with the labor market, purposeful investments in science. In addition, he wants to raise the quality of higher education in cooperation with the sector's representatives.

 

Dombrovskis is part of Stockholm School of Economics in Riga and Riga Graduate School of Law teaching staff. He has a degree in economics from Clark University. He also speaks fluently three languages.
