E-election project put on hold for now
BC, Riga, 26.08.2020.Print version
The e-elections project in Latvia has been put on hold for now, Central Election Commission chairperson Kristine Berzina said today in an interview to TV3 channel, cites LETA.
She said that although the concept envisaging the introduction of the e-election option was approved several years ago, the project has not been advanced recently. The two main reasons for the delay are cyber-security concerns and the inability to ensure full confidentiality in the vote, which is an essential precondition of democratic elections.
"Let's put it this way - we have put the e-elections on hold for now, also because I do not feel very strong support from the parliamentary majority, which is supposed to promote the idea," Berzina said.
As reported, an early voting in the snap municipal elections in Riga starts this afternoon. Voters can cast their ballots at their registered polling stations.
