1,020 kilometers of main roads to be upgraded to 4-lane highways in Latvia
The Road Council supported the plan and it will be sent to the Cabinet of Ministers.
Lazdovskis said that the road development plan will be implemented in three stages. The total financing needed for the project is around EUR 3 billion.
The first stage of the project that will last until 2030 will refer to reconstruction of the Riga bypass, Riga-Jurmala, Riga-Sigulda, Riga-Jelgava and Konkese-Plavinas-Jekabpils roads - in total 178.9 kilometres, and the necessary funding will be EUR 984.6 million.
"Riga is the Latvian and Baltic transport hub, almost any main road reaches the Riga bypass, but traffic intensity on the bypass significantly increases the capacity," said Lazdovskis, adding that, for example, Salaspils-Baltezers road has been built for 6,000-8,000 cars a day, but the current intensity is 20,000 cars a day.
Riga should be reachable in 30 minutes from Tukums, Jelgava, Bauska, Ogre, Sigulda and Saulkrasti.
Digitalization is also an important aspect of the road development plan, said Lazdovskis, adding that the highways will be equipped with 5G technologies.
