Shipping of rail freight in Latvia declined by 45.8% in January-August

In the first eight months of 2020, shipping of rail freight in Latvia fell 45.8% from the same period a year ago to 15.385 million tons, reports LETA, according to the data released by the Transport Ministry.

International rail freight was down 47.9% from the first eight months of 2019 to 14.246 million tons in January-August 2020, whereas domestic rail freight grew 10.4% to 1.139 million tons.


Transit freight accounted for 11.768 million tons of total rail freight carried in the first eight months of the year, a decrease of 52.9% from the same months a year ago. Import freight carried by rail rose 3.7% to 2.254 million tons, and export cargo was up 22.9% to 224,000 tons.


Shipping of rail freight via Latvia’s ports was down 55.5% to 9.8 million tons, and deliveries of transit cargo declined 33.6% to 1.968 million tons.


A total of 41.492 million tons of freight were shipped by rail in Latvia in 2019, down 15.8% on year. This included 11.66 million tons of rail freight carried in the first three months of 2019.
