Inguna Sudraba: Parex banka must be sold, invested money – gained back

Nina Kolyako, BC, Riga, 12.10.2009.версия для печати
Parex banka must be sold and the money that was invested, needs to be gained back by all means, State Auditor Inguna Sudraba says in an interview to the newspaper Neatkariga.

Sudraba underlines that the state should rule out the option of not gaining back the resources invested in the bank. "I do not want anymore speculation regarding this matter. (..) Banking is not government business; commercial loans are commercial entities' field of activity," Sudraba said.

The state auditor also points out to the need for legislation initiatives that would prevent similar cases from repeating in future, writes LETA.

Sundraba added, commenting on the State Audit Office's analysis of Parex banka takeover deal and on institutions' reluctance to declassify documents connected to the deal: "People have no reason to hide if they are confident about their actions and can justify their decisions. In such a case they are actually willing for the community to find out about the decisions that they have taken. In this case, quite the opposite, the call to make the information public was ignored, there was hesitation and heads buried in the sand; this means the involved parties have something to hide or cannot justify their decisions."

Sudraba says she would like law enforcement institutions to examine the report on the bank's takeover deal submitted by the State Audit Office, and answer the questions asked in it. Sudraba says that because of legal restrictions, the State Audit Office also does not have full access to all information regarding the bank's operations.
