Domain reform in Estonia resulted in disappearance of 880 mln web pages

Estonian Internet Community (EIC) claims that in the course of the domain reform that is ending now around 80% of all of former .ee domain internet pages have disappeared, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

EIC said that tonight, Google started removing the web pages that were in .ee domains that were not reregistered by deadline and have now lost connection with the internet.

This means that an estimated 880 million pages of mostly Estonian language information has disappeared.

“I would not have believed that the figure would be that big,” said non-profit organisation EIC board member Elver Loho. “Our most pessimistic evaluation in January was around 500 million and we were abundantly criticised for that. Now the truth is out and it emerges that the destructive work has been shockingly thorough.”
