Baltic countries post highest growth in cereals production in EU in 2014
Some 5.123 million tons of cereals were harvested in Lithuania in 2014, a rise of 72.4% compared with the average for the period between 2000 and 2012.
Latvia's cereals production rose by 68.3% over the period to 2.227 million tons and Estonia posted a 70.3% increase to 1.222 million tons.
Across the EU, cereals production increased by 15.2% compared with the average for 2000-2012 to 331.66 million tons.
Cattle, pig and sheep numbers in Lithuania in 2014 reached 737,000, 714,000 and 124,000, respectively. Latvia had 422,000 head of cattle and 349,000 pigs, and Estonia had 265,000 head of cattle and 358,000 pigs.
The cattle population in the EU in 2014 amounted to 88.4 million, the pig population, to 148.3 million, and the sheep population, to 84.2 million animals.
