Latvian universities do not stand out as the best ones when compared with other higher education institutions in the Baltic States, University of Latvia Rector Marcis Auzins says in an interview in the newspaper Latvijas Avize today.

Marcis Auzins.

He explains that it is possible to make an assessment of higher education in Latvia with that provided elsewhere in Europe, including the other two Baltic countries, based on objective criteria. One of education quality indicators are standings of universities in the Baltic higher education institutions' rankings list, writes LETA.

Three Estonian and three Lithuanian universities have been included in the list of best schools in the Baltics, whilst the University of Latvia is the only one representing Latvia among the top ranking universities. Furthermore, University of Latvia's ranking place is not too high either. All three Lithuanian universities and two in Estonia are ranked above the University of Latvia.

Auzins admitted that the University of Latvia provided higher than average in Latvia quality of studies, however, comparing the University of Latvia with its counterparts in Lithuania and Estonia, it becomes obvious that "we are not particularly brilliant", Auzins said.
