Number of Lithuanian tourists decreased by 27.2% in H1

In the first half of this year 507,800 Lithuanian tourists went abroad. 55.5% of them were men and remaining 44.5% were women. Compared to the same period last year, the number of tourists going abroad decreased by 27.2%.

According to preliminary data of the survey on international tourism conducted by the Department of Statistics, over half of tourists (56%) indicated having stayed at their relatives, friends or private sector; 37% of them lived in hotels and motels, writes ELTA/LETA.

 

In January-June this year, tourists went on 568,100 trips. 19.2% of them were trips with tourism services packages purchased from tourism companies. Total number of trips over the first half year went down 30% year-on-year and that of trips with tourism services portfolio – 33.1%.

 

In January-June this year, 79.2% of Lithuanian tourists travelled abroad on vacation, others went on business trips or had some professional interest. The number of tourism trips went down 27.1% year-on-year and that of business trips went down 39.2%.

 

Over the first six months of 2009, the majority of Lithuanian residents (16.1%) travelled to Belarus, Poland (11.5%), Germany (10%), Russia (9.8%) and Latvia (8.2%).

 

The number of trips when local tourists stayed for one night or longer totaled 1.065 million trips. This figure stood at 1.24 million trips over the same period last year. The number of one-day visitors stood at 6.4 million compared to 7.6 million trips performed in January-June last year.

 

The most popular transport for trips was a car: 83% of all local tourists travelled by car, 14% travelled by busses and the remaining 2% – by train.

 

The majority of tourists went to Vilnius district and Kaunas district (17% each), Klaipeda district (14%), Alytus district (13%), Utena (11%), Siauliai district (10%), Panevezys and Marijampole districts (6% each), Taurage and Telsiai district (3% each).
