The survey took a real family as an example – a seven-year old son, four-year-old daughter, a mother working in a creative industry, and a father who is studying for a PhD and earns most of his income as a lecturer at a higher education institution, writes LETA.
Riga's main advantages compared to its neighbors were lower apartment rental costs and free use of public transport for children under the fourth grade.
Tallinn is ahead of its neighbors in having lower costs for utility services, children's schooling, and food. For example, in Tallinn the son would have to buy a schoolbag, but textbooks and workbooks would be provided by the school. After-school groups would also be free. It also turned out that a trip to the cinema to see "Toy Story 3" for the father and both children would be cheapest in the Estonian capital.
The food on the family's weekly menu is cheaper in Vilnius than in Riga, according to the newspaper. Comparing food prices, it was found that a liter of milk is one santim cheaper in Vilnius than in the other two cities, while a box of ten eggs is most expensive in Riga, and cheapest in Tallinn. Sugar is also cheapest in Tallinn, while the best price for potatoes was found in Vilnius. Riga is the cheapest of the three cities for toaster bread.
Hot water and electricity are cheapest in Tallinn, while the cheapest gasoline was found in Riga.
