In 2009, about every fifth Lithuanian (20.6% of the population) lived on the poverty line. In 2009, the number of the poor grew by 0.6% year-on-year, Statistics Lithuania reports.

The highest risk of poverty was observed among the residents living alone (46.9%), the residents living in households consisting of one adult and dependent children (46.4%) and two adults with three or more children (32.9%), writes LETA/ELTA.

In 2008, an increase in the maternity (paternity) benefits and the prolonged period of paying them, a growth in social benefits for children led to a fall in the number of poor large and single-parent families.

In 2009, about 690,000 residents lived below the poverty line. The at-risk-of-poverty threshold stood at 831 litas (240.57 euros) per month for a person living alone and 1,746 litas (505.47 euros) for a family consisting of two adults and two children under 14 years of age. Poverty rates are estimated on the basis of the previous years' income.
