Latvian Saeima Speaker: good political relations with Turkey will foster economic cooperation

Latvia's excellent political relations with Turkey will foster the economic cooperation between both countries, Saeima Speaker Solvita Aboltina (Unity) told members of the press yesterday after a meeting with the Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin.

Aboltina emphasized the exemplary Latvian-Turkish cooperation on every level and reminded that Turkey supported Latvia on its way to NATO and that the Turkish Air Force has protected Latvia's air space. Aboltina also expressed her satisfaction on the cooperation between the Latvian and Turkish parliaments, informs LETA.

 

Aboltina emphasized that both countries must make use of their good political relations to foster economic cooperation. Several agreements have been signed already and a direct flight route between both countries has been launched.

 

Aboltina also added that Turkey holds an important role in the energy diversification issue, which is important to both – Latvia and the European Union.

 

During the meeting, the parties also discussed the enlargement of the European Union, Turkey's membership talks with the EU, as well as the international and security policy matters, including the latest developments in Egypt.

 

Aboltina pointed out that Latvia supports the EU's enlargement according to the individual principle and wished luck to Turkey.

 

When commenting on the situation in Egypt and other region's countries, Aboltina admitted that Turkey is the beacon of stability in the region.

 

Sahin in his turn pointed out the successful cooperation between both countries and thanked Aboltina for the support.

 

Sahin explained that both – Latvian and Turkish parliaments are elected by their people and the improvement of the cooperation between them will bring both nations closer together.
