Foreign trade deficit of Lithuania increased by 3.2% in January–July 2008

Statistics Lithuania reports that according to non-final data obtained from customs declarations and Intrastat reporting data, exports in January–July 2008 totalled LTL 32.8 billion in terms of commodity value, while imports to Lithuania equalled LTL 43.6 billion. The foreign trade deficit of Lithuania made LTL 10.8 billion and was by 3.2% higher than during the same period in 2007. Data on trade with EU countries were adjusted having received VAT declarations’ data.

In January–July 2008 against January–July 2007, exports and imports increased, respectively, by 33.8 and 24.6%; mineral products excluded, exports and imports increased, respectively, by 16.5 and 6.3%.

 

The major impact on the growth of exports was made by the increase in exports of petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (2.4 times), fertilizers (94.1%), cereals (6 times). Imports grew due to the increased imports of crude petroleum and natural gas (2.5 times), natural calcium phosphates and crude sulphur (3.5 times), railway or tramway locomotives, rolling stock and parts thereof (5.4 times), fertilizers (2.4 times).

 

In July 2008 against June 2008, exports and imports grew by, respectively, 2.8 and 1.7%. Seasonally adjusted, exports and imports increased by 2.3%.

 

In July 2008 against July 2007, exports and imports increased by, respectively, 35.2 and 22.7%; mineral products excluded, exports increased and imports decreased by, respectively, 19.7 and 0.7%.

 

In January–July 2008, the most important partners in exports were Russia (15.1%), Latvia (11.2%), Germany (7.3%), Poland (6%). The most significant partners in imports were Russia (30.7%), Germany (11.7%), Poland (9.7%), Latvia (5.2%).

 

The bulk of Lithuania’s exports in January–July 2008 fell per mineral products (26.6%), machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (10.3%), products of the chemical or allied industries (9.5%). The most significant share in imports fell per mineral products (30%), machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (14%) and vehicles, aircraft, vessels and associated transport equipment (13.1%).
