According to the latest statistical data from the European Union's Eurostat service, the number of immigrants in Lithuania is among the lowest in the European Union, and the majority of immigrants who come to Lithuania are non-EU citizens, Radio Vilnius informs.

According to the statistics, Lithuania had only 2,200 of the 3 million immigrants registered in the EU in 2006. In comparison, Spain and Germany were the countries with the largest numbers of immigrants – 803,000 and 558,000, respectively.

In Latvia, non-EU immigrants made up 54% of all immigrants. Approximately 12% of immigrants in Latvia were citizens of Lithuania, making them the second-largest group of immigrants in Latvia.

In Lithuania, there were 0.7 immigrants per every 1,000 residents. Lithuania was at the bottom of the list with Romania at 0.4 and Latvia at 1.

Out of the immigrants registered in Lithuania, 18% came from EU member states, while the remaining 82% were citizens of non-EU countries.

In the EU as a whole, immigrants from other EU countries make up 40% of the total, while 60% come from countries outside the community, in almost equal shares from Europe, Asia, America and Africa.
