14,800 people compete for seats in Estonian municipalities

14,800 candidates and 924 candidate lists have been presented for the upcoming local municipality elections in Estonia; LETA/Postimees Online reports.

According to the National Elections Committee, 14,818 people have been submitted, of whom 102 want to run at the elections as independent candidates. Parties have submitted 632 and election unions 292 candidate lists.

 

The Centre Party has submitted its candidate list in 192, Pro Patria and Res Publica Union in 174, Reform Party in 156 and Social Democratic Party in 96 towns and parishes.

 

Submitting candidates for registration lasted from August 21 to last Thursday. The candidates who have been presented according to requirements, will be registered on Sunday latest after which the order of candidate numbers will be distributed by drawing lots.

 

At the 2009, local municipality elections, 8 parties, 324 election unions and 159 independent candidates participated, altogether 15,322 people.

 

The local municipality elections take place on October 20.
