Maxima's dubious achievement is being singled out in wake of the Riga-Zolitude supermarket collapse. The jury notes that "this catastrophe with loss of lives happened in construction. But if we look here at health and safety, education, science, emigration and demographics, they too point to a sickness we find hard to take. In each of these sectors, something is very much askew."
The jury lauds Bildt, a true supporter of the Baltic States, who has a good word for them wherever he appears, reminding that they regained their independence heroically and non-violently. Bildt specifically mentions the 1989 "Baltic Chain" of citizens, hand-in-hand, connected for the cause of freedom.
Also being honored with "Ciceron" this year are MEP Sandra Kalniete, Latvian National Library Director Andris Vilks, Jelgava Mayor Andris Ravins and LU Associate Professor Abrams Kleckins.
The "Ciceron" presentation ceremony will be held today at 12 noon, third floor, the Academy of Sciences building in Riga.
