Speaking at the traditional new year event for Latvia's foster families, President of Latvia Andris Berzins suggested that in pondering the future, one should keep in mind children, who have no parents, and lend them a helping hand, informs LETA.

Berzins commented that "those who believe that they will be 'saved' by pension accruals in their old age are mistaken. In this day and age, only humane support can save us."

The president mentioned the statistic that there are just as many children waiting for guardians right now, as there are children in foster families. He devoted a few words in English to the foreign sponsors and financial supporters of foster families, expressing gratitude.

Attending the event was First Lady Dace Seisuma.
