A fresh study by Praxis indicates that 31% of Estonian residents have participated in voluntary work over the year 2013 and people are most motivated by the possibility of getting emotional satisfaction from it, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Environmental protection was last year the most popular sphere among fields of volunteer work.

61% of people who did voluntary work participated in work cleaning the environment, in maintenance and renovation.

Other popular spheres include advancing local life, participating in village movements and district community societies in towns.

52% of the volunteers participated in voluntary activities at their own initiative and 46% at the initiative or request of some organisation. 15% of all volunteers worked at a public sector institution.

A similar study was carried out in 2009. Then the share of volunteers was 30%.
