Grand opening for Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavpils
Today, the Mark Rothko Art Center is holding its ceremonial opening at the former Arsenal Building at the Daugavpils Fortress in Daugavpils (southeastern Latvia), LETA was informed by the art center's marketing specialist, Inga Goldberga.
Attending the opening will be top state officials, the children of Mark Rothko (Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko) as well as art experts from around the world.
Various events will take place throughout the day. At 8:30 p.m., a concert of accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen (Finland) will be held outside in the forecourt.
The art center will open its doors to the public on April 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Mark Rothko Art Center will be the only one place in Eastern Europe where it will be possible to see the original works of the preeminent artist of the XX century, a founder of Abstract Expressionism.
The Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center’s collection includes 40 reproductions (museum copy quality) of paintings, which reflect different periods of the artist, as well as paintings from the annual Mark Rothko Plein Air, which has become a beloved annual tradition in Daugavpils. They were donated by more than 100 artists from such countries as Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Austria, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Armenia and the United States. 208 works in various technique have been created from during the Plein Air from 2005 to 2012.
The Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art center will become the multifunctional institution of contemporary art in the space of the fortress Arsenal building (3 Mihaila Street). Visitors will see original Rothko works and reproductions and digital exposition on the artist’s biography and creativity. Furthermore, visitors will also be able to stroll the Rothko Silent Room, video hall, cultural and historical expositions and temporary exhibitions of artists from Latvia, Europe and the world.
The art center will also feature conference and seminar facilities, meeting rooms and artists residences. Every visitor will enjoy gourmet food and good spirit in the Rothko Restaurant.
Various events will be held at the center throughout the year.
Furthermore, the 110th anniversary celebration of Mark Rothko’s birth will take place in the center on September 25.
