BC, Riga, 15.05.2013.Print version

Latvian national hockey team lost to Finland 2-3 (1-1, 0-1, 1-0, 0-1) in the overtime of the last Ice Hockey World Championship preliminary round game, placing sixth in Group H and eleventh in the overall rankings, informs LETA.

Gints Meija opened the scoring, one timing a pass from Edgars Dzerins in the ninth minute of the first period. Finland's Sakari Salminen made the score 1-1 less than a minute later on a pass from behind the net.

Mikael Granlund scored Finland's second goal on a power play halfway through the second period.

Latvia played much more aggressively in the third period, when finally Roberts Jekimovs tied the game at 2-2 on a pass from Gints Meija.

In the overtime, the Latvians were pressing hard, keeping the puck in the Finnish zone most of the time, but the Finns capitalized on the first chance they had – Antti Pihlstrom scored the third goal on a breakaway.

Even so, Kristers Gudlevskis played remarkably well in Latvia's goal.

Meija and Granlund were named the best players after yesterday's game.
