Word Military Modern Pentathlon Championship starts in Latvia today
The opening ceremony for the 40th Word Military Modern Pentathlon Championship will take place in the territory of the Latvian National Armed Forces' (NAF) Adazi Military Base at 6:30 p.m. today, informs LETA.
NAF Commander, Major-General Juris Maklakovs, International Military Sports Council's (CISM) Secretary General Colonel Michel van Meurs, President of the CISM Modern Pentathlon Committee, Lieutenant Colonel Paulo Roberto Ribas, President of the Latvian Olympic Committee Aldonis Vrublevskis and Head of the NAF Sports club and director of the championship, Lieutenant Colonel Agris Libergs will be present at the championship's opening ceremony, as LETA was informed by NAF commander's spokesman, Captain Normunds Stafeckis.
From today, through July 30 Latvia hosts the Word Military Modern Pentathlon Championship for the first time. The championship is organized by the CISM and the National Armed Forces (NAF) in collaboration with the Latvian Federation of Modern Pentathlon, and sports centers "Keizarmezs" and "Kleisti".
Around 90 athletes, participating in the championship, will represent Austria, Belarus, Brazil, South Korea, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Germany and Latvian NAF.
Latvia's representatives will be Corporal Jelena Rublevska, Corporal Deniss Cerkovskis, Corporal Sandris Sika and soldier Mihails Jefremenko.
Last year, when the championship took place in Brazil, Sika won the gold medal, the Latvian team earned the silver medal in team competition and bronze – in relay-race.
