Gulbis stuns Federer at French Open and reached quarters

The Latvian tennis star Ernests Gulbis beat Roger Federer (Switzerland) in five sets at the French Open (Roland Garros-2014) on Sunday, informs LETA.
In grueling and thrilling fashion, Gulbis won over the fourth-seeded Federer 6-7 (5:7), 7-6 (7:3), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will take on Tomas Berdych (Czech Republic). This is the second time in Gulbis career that he reaches the quarterfinal stage of a "Grand Slam" tournament, and he will rise to at least the 13th place in the ATP rankings this week.
For Federer, on the other hand, this is the first time since 2004 that he fails to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open.
In the first set yesterday, both players broke each other's serve once, taking the set to the tie-break that was won by Federer by a narrow margin.
The second set was even more dramatic, with Federer moving ahead 3-0 only to lose the three subsequent games, 3-3. Federer won the next two games, but again lost his serve. The set ended in a tie-break also, but this time Gulbis was more successful and won 7:3.
In the third set, Gulbis won the sixth game and held on to his lead to take the set 6-2. In the fourth though, Federer broke Gulbis' serve twice, winning the set 6-4.
Gulbis won three games in a row at the start of the fifth, decisive set and continued to play convincingly, winning the match that had continued for more than three-and-a-half hours.
In the post-match interview, Gulbis said that this could have been the greatest victory in his career.
Gulbis is currently ranked 17th in the ATP rankings, whereas Federer is in fourth place.
This is the fourth time Gulbis plays Federer, and the second time he wins.
Gulbis has earned 360 ATP ranking points for reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open. The next opponent for Gulbis will be Thomas Berdych.
As reported, Gulbis is competing in the French Open for the eighth time already. In 2008, he reached the tournament's quarterfinals where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
