New genocide, freedom fight museum to be opened in Lithuania's Lazdijai
The authorities of Lithuania's southwestern District of Lazdijai plan to establish a new museum to honor the memory of the victims of genocide and freedom fight and move the existing Museum of Fights for Freedom, opened in Lazdijai almost 25 years ago, to the new location, the Lietuvos Zinios daily writes on Tuesday, cites LETA/BNS.
The existing museum could be housed in a former KGB building which was formerly used by Soviet militia and also as a sobering facility. The local authorities have already allocated funds for buying the building from its existing owners.
The building still has authentic Soviet-time prison cells, bars, doors and an internal courtyard for prisoners.
After visiting the new location with local officials, Terese Birute Burauskaite, head of the Genocide and Resistance Research Center of Lithuania, said the building's authenticity was of great value.
"A museum is built for future generations. For people who are now still young to imagine after they grow up what the past of their country was and to learn history not only from textbooks," Burauskaite told Verslo Zinios.
