Vilnius police late on Thursday detained the man who escaped from a police car with an AK-47, Deputy Police Commissioner General Edvardas Sileris told BNS.

"The fugitive has been detained," he said.

The man was found in the area of Naujininkai on other side of Vilnius from where he escaped=, writes LETA.

Antoni Mikulskis, deputy chief of Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat, told BNS the man did not resist.

"He did not have the AK-47," Mikulskis said. He later told BNS that the weapon had been found near the central bus and train station in Vilnius.

The search operation involved around 3,000 police officers, a helicopter and even the Lithuanian Police Anti-terrorist Operations Unit ARAS.

The police say Igor Molotkov, born in 1991, escaped from a police car outside a police station on Laisves Avenue in Vilnius with an AK-47 with one full clip.

The man has mental and drug problems, police said.
