After considerable discussion, the Song and Dance Festival Council has decided to keep with tradition, as is the desire of the vast majority of participants, that the next festival – in 2018, be held the first week in July, informs LETA.

The Council announced its approval today for the XXVI Nationwide Latvian Song Festival and the XVI Dance Festival to commence June 30 to July 8, 2018. Approving this decision also was the Presidential Chancery and the Association of Local Governments.

In the Council's discussion, two matters were reviewed concerning scheduling. First, the Lithuanian government had requested Latvia refrain from holding any major events on July 6th because Lithuania celebrates the coronation of its King Mindaugas. Also, one Festival day falls on the Jewish Victims of Genocide Memorial Day July 4. The Presidential Chancery and the Ministry of Culture report that solutions are planned to avoid any tactlessness in both cases.
