Four goals not enough for Latvia against Switzerland

BC, Riga, 12.05.2016.Print version

The Latvian national hockey team was defeated by Switzerland 4:5 (0:0, 3:3, 1:2) in a Group A game at the Hockey World Championship in Moscow yesterday, informs LETA.

Four goals is the highest single-game total for Latvia thus far at the tournament, yet it was not enough to beat Switzerland. Mikelis Redlihs scored two goals, while Ronalds Kenins and Aleksejs Sirokovs scored one goal each. On the other hand, Nine Niederreiter scored two goals for Switzerland, and Sven Andrighetto, Eric Blum and Gregory Hofmann added one goal each.

After a scoreless first period, Switzerland quickly moved ahead 3:0, but Latvia needed just five minutes to erase the deficit and get back in the game.

The Swiss scored their fourth goal six minutes into the third period but, again, it took Latvia just 26 seconds to make the score 4:4. Switzerland was more active and generating more opportunities, and eventually scored their fifth goal with just 89 seconds to play. Edgars Masalskis was pulled from the goal, yet Latvia was unable to score an equalizer.

With the win, Switzerland now has seven points and moves up to second place in Group A, while Latvia is in last, eighth place with two points.

In another Group A game, Sweden won Kazakhstan.

Latvia's next game will be on Friday against Denmark.
