Latvia's Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins on Tuesday lost their second Pool D match at the Rio Olympic Games to Nivaldo Diaz/Sergio Gonzalez, of Cuba, 1-2 (21:23, 21:19, 9:15), reports LETA.

In the other Pool D match on Tuesday, Canada's Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk beat Evandro Oliveira/Pedro Solberg Salgado (Brazil) 2-1.

At the moment, Diaz/Gonzalez top Pool D with two wins, Samoilovs/Smedins and Saxton/Schalk have one win each, while Evandro/Pedro Solberg are in last place with two matches lost.

As reported, Samoilovs/Smedins defeated Saxton/Schalk 2-1 (21:17, 18:21, 15:13) on Monday, while Diaz/Gonzalez beat Evandro/Pedro Solberg 2-1.

Samoilovs/Smedins will close the group stage facing Oliveira/Pedro Solberg on Thursday.

24 teams participate in the preliminary round, divided into six groups of four. The two highest-ranked teams in each group and the two best third-ranked teams will advance to the knockout stage. The remaining four third-ranked teams will participate in the lucky loser playoffs.

As reported, Smedins, playing together with Martins Plavins, won bronze at the London Olympics four years ago.
