Duck hunting season kicks off in Latvia

The duck hunting season gets under way in Latvia this weekend, Elina Ezerina, a representative of the
Nature Conservation Agency, told LETA.
The water fowl hunting season officially kicks off at 4 p.m. on Saturday,
August 12. Until September 14, hunters will be allowed to shoot ducks on
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and from September 15 to November 30 they
will be able to hunt them every day.
The species of waterfowl that can be hunted this season include Eurasian
coot, teal, gadwall, garganey, wigeon, northern pintail, common pochard, tufted
duck, great scaup, common scoter and common goldeneye.
Latvia’s environmental authorities, including the Nature Conservation
Agency, will be monitoring duck hunting to make sure that the hunters follow
the rules and restrictions in force in Latvia, especially in protected nature
territories. Hunters are not allowed to use lead bullets or shoot protected birds
like ospreys or white-tailed eagles, as well as non-game species like great
crested grebes, cormorants, velvet scoters and long-tailed ducks.
