Conductor Mariss Jansons passes away in St Petersburg

The world famous Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons (born 1943), chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, passed away in St Petersburg.
Jansons, who had a heart condition, recently cancelled several concerts for health reasons, but returned after a six-month absence at the end of October to continue conducting his Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
According to Russia media, Jansons died of heart failure.
Jansons had previously worked as chief conductor of such orchestras as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
He also led the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's annual New Year's concerts in 2006, 2012 and 2016.
In 1996, Jansons suffered a heart attack will conducting in Oslo.
