Stradins University Hospital opens first stem cell transplant center in Baltics
Today, at 12 p.m., the first stem cell transplant center in the Baltic states will be opened in a ceremony at Riga Stradins University Hospital, as the hospital's representatives informed LETA.
The new center will have a modern laboratory, in which it is planned to develop new stem cells research technologies and treatment methods.
The transplant center will serve as the main platform for the development of stem cell treatment in Latvia and the neighboring region. Stem cell treatment is rapidly developing all around the world, because stem cells can help restore the functions of the body that have been lost due to cells having been destroyed by aging, illnesses or injuries. Stem cell treatment can be an alternative to complicated and potentially mutilating operations or prolonged usage of drugs.
Present at the opening of the new stem cell transplant center will be Health Minister Ivars Eglitis (People's Party), Stradins University Hospital board chairman Arnolds Atis Veinbergs, Head of Latvian Cardiology Center and University of Latvia Associate Professor Andrejs Erglis, the stem transplant center's director Eriks Jakobsons, and others.
