Latvian MEP proposes to establish totalitarian regimes museum in Brussels

BC, Riga, 19.03.2009.Print version

With the purpose to give Europeans a better idea about the crimes committed by totalitarian regimes, a museum dedicated to this theme should be opened in Brussels, member of the European Parliament Roberts Zile (For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK) said at a European Parliament conference "European Conscience and Crimes of Totalitarian Communism: 20 Years After".

He underlined that a monument to the victims of the communist regime was already erected and unveiled in Washington, and similar initiatives should be launched in Europe as well, because they encourage equality in addressing all victims of totalitarian regimes without discrimination, writes LETA.

Furthermore, in Zile's opinion, studies about all the totalitarian regimes in the history of Europe and their crimes should be included in school programs of all European Union countries. It would be a good idea to establish a European Totalitarian Regimes Foundation which would provide funding for studies of history of totalitarian regimes and would promote society awareness about these matters. Archives with information about the totalitarian regimes' crimes should have free access.

In Zile's opinion, most Europeans are still not aware of the crimes, committed by Soviet totalitarian communism in Europe.

He underlined that EU countries should stand united in the questions concerning the totalitarian regime crimes. "In these matters EU must not be afraid of Russia," Zile underlined.
