Baltic states switched to daylight-saving time
BC, Riga, 30.03.2009.Print version
On the night from March 28 to March 29, at 3 p.m., Latvia turned clocks one hour forward and switched to daylight-saving time, reports LETA.
According to Cabinet of Minister regulations, the switch to summer time occurs the last Sunday in March at 3 a.m., just as clocks are turned back one hour at 4 a.m. the last Sunday in October.
The same practice applies to Lithuania and Estonia.
Daylight-saving time was first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1908. Until 1981, almost all European countries had agreed to daylight-saving time, as well as the United States, Canada, China and Australia.
Latvia is aligned with the second time zone – calculated as Greenwich Mean Time plus two hours.
