Two Estonian soldiers has fallen during NATO operation in Afghanistan

Warrant Officer Eerik Salmus and Sergeant Raivis Kang, Estcoy-8’s battle pioneers, has died on Sunday afternoon during the fulfilling of their battle duties in the NATO operation in Afghanistan, writes LETA, referring the National Broadcasting.

The insurgents in Afghanistan attacked the armed vehicle of the battle pioneers with a self-made explosive device a couple of kilometers from the patrolling base Pimon in the Helmand province’s Nad-e-Al region.

 

The Estonian pioneers’ unit was cleaning the road of explosives. The 26-year-old Salmus died in the attack right away whereas 26-year-old Kang was gravely injured, but medics were unable to save his life.

 

The Defence Forces and the President Toomas Hendrik Ilves expressed their condolences to the loved ones of the two soldiers and the Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, the Minister for Defense Jaak Aaviksoo and the Minister for Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet issued the joint statement, expressing their condolences to the families and loved ones of the men.
