Notorious expatriated Estonian businessman Harry Männil dies

Large-scale entrepreneur Harry Männil, whom the Simon Wiesenthal centre accused of war crimes but who was cleared of any wrongdoing, died on Monday at the age of 89 in San Jose, Costa Rica, Maaleht/LETA writes.

 

Männil left Estonia in 1943 and lived in Venezuela since 1946. He was in the management of several large Venezuelan companies and was the president an influential council of expatriated Estonians, compiled when Edgar Savisaar was the prime minister of Estonia and called also the friends of the economy club in 1990-1992.

 

The Simon Wiesenthal centre accused Männil, who during the German occupation of Estonia worked in a German security institution, of crimes against Jews but a very thorogh investigation cleared him of any guilt.
