More than quarter of Lithuanian population lives in Vilnius district
In the beginning of January 2010, there were 850,300 people (25.5% of all Lithuanian population) living in Vilnius, an increase of 506 people as compared to last year, informs ELTA/LETA.
According to the Department of Statistics, at the beginning of 2010, the total number of Lithuanian population stood at 3.329.000 people – a decrease of 20,900 people as compared to last year. At the beginning of the year 2010, Vilnius was the only district in Lithuania where the population increased.
Over the past five years, the number of population in Vilnius district grew by 1,758, or 0.2%.
In 2009, the natural population change (the difference between the number of births and the number of deaths over a period of time) in Vilnius district was positive, whereas in 2008 – it was negative. Last year, the total number of marriages stood at 6,288 and divorces at 2,345, while in the year 2008 – 6.687 and 2.734 respectively.
