Latvian tennis player Sevastova surprisingly defeats Jankovic in first round of Monterrey

Yesterday, Latvia's top ranked female tennis player Anastasija Sevastova achieved her career's biggest win by defeating tournament favorite Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the Monterrey WTA ''International'' tennis tournament, informs LETA.
The rising 19-year-old from Latvia is currently ranked 72nd in the WTA tennis rankings, whilst Jankovic, a former world number one, is currently ranked ninth.
In the first set, Sevastova quickly lost her serve and went down 0-3. However, the Latvian was able to regain the initiative and even take a 5-4 lead, but in the end she lost the first set 5-7.
Sevastova also lost her serve early on in the first set, however, the young Latvian did not give up and fought back to take a 5-3 lead, and eventually won the set 6-4. The third set was an intense battle between Sevastova and Jankovic, as the two played beautiful tennis, however, Sevastova was a bit better in the end and was able to celebrate her career's biggest victory.
Sevastova has earned 30 WTA ranking points for qualifying for the tournament's second round.
In the tournament's second round, Sevastova will play Iveta Benesova (Czech Republic), who defeated Jill Craybas (United States) in the first round.
Benesova is currently ranked 52nd in the WTA tennis rankings.
As reported, Sevastova also qualified for the second round of the prestigious Dubai WTA "Premier" series tennis tournament last month.
