Son of overthrown Kyrgyz president leaves Latvia

BC, Riga, 16.04.2010.Print version

Maksim Bakiyev, son of overthrown Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, left Latvia this morning, according to information received by LETA from reliable sources.

His destination is not known, but it is most likely that M. Bakiyev has traveled in the eastern direction. His father K. Bakiyev, who has signed a document officially declaring his resignation as president, is currently located in the city of Taraz in Kazakhstan.

K. Bakiyev's departure from Kyrgyzstan was discussed this week in Washington by the leaders of the United States, Russia and Kazakhstan, U.S. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley confirmed on Thursday.

As reported, the arrival in Latvia of M. Bakiyev, the son of the deposed president, was discussed in advance with state institutions, including the Foreign Ministry.

Kyrgyzstan's new Prime Minister Roza Otunbayeva even suggested that the president himself might head for Latvia; however, Latvian officials announced that the matter was "not on the agenda".

M. Bakiyev is Latvian banker Valeriy Belokon's partner in the company Maval aktivi, in which each own a 50 percent stake, as well as being the sole owner of the company "Who Is Who", which previously belonged to Belokon. He is also the deputy chairman of Kimmels Riga, which is controlled by Belokon.
