International sand sculpture festival to take place in Kaunas
On Saturday, the first international sand sculpture festival in Lithuania, Olialia Sunset Sand 2010, will open near the retail trade and leisure centre Kauno Akropolis, informs LETA/ELTA.
According to Vladimiras Kononenka, manager of Kauno Akropolis and one of the festival's organizers, it is a unique event which will show Kaunas residents and guests how artists create unique works of art from sand. One of the sculptures will be dedicated to Arvydas Sabonis, the legendary basketball player of Lithuania and president of the basketball club Zalgiris, and the Zalgiris team captain Dainius Salenga.
In cooperation with the Baltic sand sculpture artists' association, well-known artists were invited to take part in the festival in Kaunas. The festival is expected to become a traditional one.
The participants of the festival Olialia Sunset Sand 2010 will have to perform such tasks as making sand sculptures of the U.S. Statue of Liberty, Trakai Castle, the Eiffel Tower and the Tower of Pisa, characters of the animated film Shrek, famous people, etc. The highest sand sculpture, 6 meters in height, will be devoted to the late King of Pop Michael Jackson. It will be the highest Jackson's sand sculpture in the world.
The Olialia Sunset Sand 2010 festival will be attended by ten world famous authors of sand sculptures from the U.S., Japan, Great Britain, Finland, Latvia, Russia, Ireland and Lithuania.
