On Monday, Latvia's top ranked tennis player Ernests Gulbis kicked off the Los Angeles ''ATO World Tour 250'' series tennis tournament with a win, informs LETA.

Gulbis defeated Slovakia's Lukas Lacko 7-5, 7-5 in the tournament's first round.

This was Gulbis' first competitive tennis match in over two months, after the Latvian tennis player returned from a knee injury suffered during the French Open in May.

At the moment, Gulbis is ranked 28th in the ATP tennis rankings, whilst Lacko is ranked 70th.

Gulbis has earned 20 ATP ranking points for qualifying for the second-round of the Los Angeles tournament.

In the second-round, Gulbis will play the winner of the first-round match-up between Slovakia's Karol Beck and Colombia's Alejandro Falla.

As reported, Gulbis dropped out of last year's Los Angeles tournament in the second-round.
