Electric cars rally from Tallinn-Monte Carlo to take place in summer

BC, Tallinn, 10.02.2011.Print version

The city of Tallinn will restore this summer an old tradition – the Tallinn-Monte Carlo rally but different from the Star Ride of the 1930s, the 3,000 km distance will this summer be covered by electric cars, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht Online reports.

On Wednesday, mayor of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar and honorary consul of Monaco in Estonia Jüri Tamm signed a cooperation agreement on organising the rally.

The rally starts on June 2 and passes through Helsinki, Turku, Stockholm, Norrköping, Jönköping, Stömsnäsbruk, Malmö, Copenhagen, Rodby, Lübeck, Hamburg, Kassel, Grünberg, Heidelberg, Baden-Baden, Freiburg, Zurich, Berne, Lausanne, Geneva, Aymavilles, Torino and Cuneo; on the road there will be 27 places to reload the electric cars.

Jüri Tamm said at the city government press conference that although the rally will take place with cars allowed in ordinary traffic and observing the traffic regulations, it is still sports. Every day a certain period of time is prescribed during which the contestants have to arrive at the finish while every delay or early arrival brings minuses. The rules of the rally are agreed upon with FIA.

A maximum of 20 cars are expected to cover the whole distance between Tallinn and Monte Carlo. Some are factory teams like Tesla, others are owners of electrical cars in Europe or world. There are just five electrical cars registered in Estonia now.

Registration for the event starts on April 1.
