Sean Connery honored with sculpture in Tallinn

A bust in honour of the Scottish actor Sir Sean Connery has been unveiled – in Estonia, The Telegraph reports.

The bronze bust, which was unveiled by Peter Carter, the British Ambassador to Estonia, was commissioned by the Scottish Club or Soti Klubi of Tallinn, informs LETA.

"Sir Sean Connery is, without a doubt, an icon," Carter told guests at the sculpture's unveiling ceremony. "He is variously known as James Bond or the sexiest man of the century. He's a great British actor, a great Scot actor and a great symbol for Scotland."

The club commissioned the 9,000 pounds worth bust from Tiiu Kirsipuu, a famous Estonian sculptor whose best known work is a pair of statues of Oscar Wilde and his contemporary, Estonian writer Eduard Wide, in the city of Tartu.

Iain Lawson, Estonia's honorary consul to Scotland, said that the bust was part of a long-term project to fill the club with sculptures of famous Scots.

"The club already has a bust of Robert Burns, and felt that the next step was to have a bust of a living Scot. Sean Connery seemed to be the perfect choice," Lawson said.

According to Lawson, the Soti Klubi, which dates back to Soviet times, is an exclusive society which counts many of Estonia's most powerful politicians and businessmen among its members. Although it has a public restaurant in its building in Tallinn's Old Town, membership of the club is usually by invitation only.
