Latvia defeated by Poland; Russia by Argentina – no chances for Latvia to play in world U-19 b-ball quarters

Latvia was defeated by Poland 78-86 (13-27, 14-25, 16-12, 35-22) in their second Group E game of the U-19 World Basketball Championships in Riga on Tuesday, and Argentina's win over Russia later last night eliminated Latvia from the tournament, informs LETA.
Kaspars Vecvagars scored 21 points in yesterday's game against Poland, Davis Bertans had 16 points and 11 rebounds, whereas Janis Timma scored 15 points.
Mateusz Ponitka was the highest scorer for Poland with 26 points, and Michal Michalak had 19 points.
After a disastrous first half, which Latvia lost 27-52, the Latvians were almost able to make a comeback in the second, and were just 4 points down near the end of the game, nevertheless, the Poles kept calm and steadily increased their advantage to ten points again before the buzzer.
With Argentina's win over Russia 73-70 last night, Australia is currently in first place in Group E with nine points and Poland is second with as many points. Brazil and Argentina each have eight points, whereas Russia and Latvia have seven. Four best teams in the group will advance to the tournament's quarterfinals.
Latvia is yet to play Russia, the match is scheduled for 7 p.m. (Latvian time) today. Regardless the score, Latvia will not be able to qualify for the quarterfinals.
As reported, Latvia finished in second place in its preliminary round group to qualify for the tournament's qualification round.
