Latvia moves up to 11th in IIHF rankings; will host Olympic qualification tournament

After finishing in overall 10th place at Ice Hockey World Championships 2012, Latvia has moved up to 11th in the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) rankings, writes LETA.
Latvia was ranked 13th before this year's tournament.
With the 11th ranking, Latvia has also earned the right to host a qualification tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Teams ranked 10-12 will host the three qualification tournaments for the Olympics.
Latvia will play France, Kazakhstan and the team that finishes second in the first qualification stage (most likely Ukraine) in the qualification tournament in Riga. Only the winner will earn a spot in the 2014 Olympics.
In the other qualification groups, Germany will host Austria, Italy and the team that finishes third in the first qualification stage, while Denmark will host Belarus, Slovenia and the team that finishes first in the first qualification stage.
A total of 12 teams will play in the 2014 Winter Olympics, with nine teams already qualified.
