Estlink 1 adds capacity to electricity market

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 23.03.2010.Print version
Nordic electricity bourse Nord Pool Spot announced yesterday that two largest owners of the Estlink 1 direct current cable, Eesti Energia and Latvenergo will give a large part of the cable’s capacity that they own to the electricity market use, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Elering’s board chairman Taavi Veskimägi said that this step gives a strong signal about the launch of the electricity market in Baltic States and its further integration with Nordic electricity markets.

“While at first there were discussions that 50 MW of the cable would be given to market use, today’s announcement exceeds all expectations. The final decision to be made on Thursday by one of the cable’s owners may increase the capacity to be given to the market even further and that increases the interest of Nordic traders towards the Estlink price region, also the interest of Baltic States and third countries’ traders towards selling to the Nordic market,” said Veskimägi.

He added that this is also a step closer to making the investment decision on Estlink 2.
